Constance's house
Just one week after Constance Ngcobo moved into her new
house in September 2007, the old one – pictured above – was
washed away in heavy rain. Up until then, this ramshackle, leaky
house was home to a family of nine, including Constance's disabled
adult son.
Even though they still don't have indoor plumbing, Constance
and her family are a hundred times better off, and so grateful
for the part played by Amathuba.
Inspired by the new house, her daughters are building another
room alongside, which will serve as a kitchen.
Constance Ngcobo undergoes transformation
MaNgcobo lost her husband during the turbulent Apartheid years. She had twelve children and grandchildren to take care of and her only source of income was the government grant, which could hardly afford them decent meals, let alone decent accommodation. The only way out was to join other shack dwellers in the hills of Embo.
“When my shack collapsed I was hopeless. I had no idea how I was going to rebuild it. I said to myself let God do as he pleases. And indeed God did as he pleased. He sent Amathuba to save me. They built a house for me. Come in. Take a look inside. Two big and strong rooms. This is my new house.”
